KASSEP trains Kano South and Central Senatorial Zone Surveillance Supervisors, Scribes and WDC Chairmen

Kano State Surveillance for Evidence and Policy (KASSEP) has trained Kano South and Central Senatorial Zone Surveillance Supervisors, Scribes and WDC Chairmen at the premises of ACEPHAP from 2nd to 3rd September, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the Director of the center, Prof. Hadiza Shehu Galadanci, Prof. Taiwo Amole, said that the numbers of maternal deaths are showcasing a deficiency in the maternal health system in Nigeria. She noted that the deaths are quite worrisome as they occur as a result of negligence and ignorance of certain procedures that are necessary before, during and after childbirth. Prof. Amole welcomed the participants and encouraged the participants to work diligently and support the state government with accurate date that can be used rightly for policy making and implementation that will significantly improve the maternal health outcomes.

Dr. Fatima Muhammad, the project manager of KASSEP presented during both sessions, highlighting the major results since the implementation of the project over 2 years. She stated in its first phase, the project gathered major data resulting to the maternal deaths in the sampled areas studied. Medical conditions such as postpartum haemorrhage, hypertension, HIV/AIDS and cardiac disorders, were among the causes of maternal deaths in Kano, the study revealed.

One of the major areas of concern explained thoroughly with the use of the Simple Registration System (SRS) Dashboard was that of data duplication which stagnates the process of data cleaning and collation. Abdulrahman Ibrahim, explained each of the roles of the participants and how they can harmoniously work together to achieve better results. Ibrahim mention that the tasks of the participants was carefully streamlined to increase their work efficiency. He then facilitated a networking session where supervisors, Ward Development Committees (WDCs), and scribes were paired to ensure teamwork is achieved during the process.

The session of networking was also supported by Shamsuddeen Muhammad, a supervisor from the Ministry of Health. As the first point of contact for the scribes and WDCs, Muhammad demonstrated the use of data entry forms that are designed for data collection at the community level. He showed his willingness to support the data collectors/participants at any time concerns may arise. They were also guided on the important criteria to note when identifying maternal mortality and still births.

In their various remarks at the end of the session, the participants stated their satisfaction with the smooth conducted of the sessions. They also admitted their aspirations for the incorporation of the data for policy formulation and implementation as well as decision making by the Kano State government.

In the past stakeholders from Ministry of Health, State Primary Health Care management Board, Kano Bureau of Statistics (KBS), National Population Commission (NPC), Kano Emirate Councils Committee on Health and Nutrition and Ward Development Committee whom are members of the KASSEP Technical Committee had several meetings regarding the project’s sustainability.
