Making Caesarean Sections Safe in Kano: ACEPHAP Showcases First-Year Achievements

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) presented the first-year achievements of the Making Caesarean Section Safe in Kano project at a dissemination meeting held on October 9, 2026. Implemented in partnership with the Global Surgery Foundation and the Kano State Ministry of Health, the project recorded an increase in Surgical Safety Checklist adherence from 0% to 78.4% across 3,358 caesarean sections, while surgical site infections declined from 9.2% to 4.8%. The project also strengthened healthcare capacity through training for over 215 health workers, leadership development for 59 professionals, and the provision of essential equipment and supplies to ten participating facilities. Commending the progress, the Kano State Commissioner of Health directed the adoption of the project’s standard operating procedures and training curricula across secondary and tertiary health facilities, while ACEPHAP announced plans to extend the intervention to Jigawa State.

The African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) recently conducted the E-MOTIVE Bundle State Training of Trainers (ToT) on the 23rd and 24th of October, bringing together healthcare professionals dedicated to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Making Cesarean Section Safe: ACEPHAP, Global Surgery Foundation conclude Training of Surgical Teams

Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) and Global Surgery Foundation teams have concluded the training of surgical teams for the Making Cesarean Section Safe project in Kano State. The surgical teams trained comprise surgeons, anaesthetic surgeons, nurse anaesthetists, circulating nurses, assistant surgeons, peri-op nurses and midwives.

ACEPHAP in collaboration with Global Surgery Foundation launches Safe Cesarean Section project in Kano State

The African Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) in collaboration with the Global Surgery Foundation based in Geneva, has on 20th April, 2025, officially launched the Safe Cesarean Section Project in Kano State. The aim of the project is to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality associated with Cesarean Section in 10 project facilities in Kano State.
