ACEPHAP research fellow and other public health experts present abstracts at CPHIA 2025
Samira Gwarzo, an Associate Research Fellow with the African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), was among the distinguished public health experts who presented abstracts at the 2025 International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA). The annual event, organized by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), took place in Durban, South Africa, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from across the continent.
The CPHIA serves as a continental platform for sharing groundbreaking research, innovative solutions, and policy recommendations that advance health outcomes across Africa. The 2025 edition focused on strengthening Africa’s capacity to manage public health challenges through homegrown expertise and collaborative action among African nations and global partners.
Speaking under the conference theme, “Moving Towards Self-Reliance to Achieve Universal Health Coverage and Health Security in Africa,” Gwarzo presented her abstract titled “Genomic Markers of Malaria Resistance.” Her presentation highlighted key findings from her ongoing research, which explores the genetic factors influencing malaria resistance in African populations, a topic crucial to understanding and mitigating the disease’s impact.
Her engagement not only marks ACEPHAP's growing contribution to the research on global health but also indicates the Centre's commitment to building capacity at the local levels in addition to evidence-informed solutions to Africa's most serious public health issues. Such international collaborations further establish ACEPHAP at the center of advancing population health and policy across the continent.
